It had been a long day. Her partner wasn’t supposed to come home for a while yet. She ate dinner. Netflixed and chilled on her own.
And went to bed.
She didn’t hear the door open. But she did feel the arms curl around her moments later. The body pressing in on her from behind was still chilled by the wind. Usually, her partner showered right after coming home. Made sense, given the kind of work she did. Today was different. She turned around in her embrace and wrapped her arms around her too. She could smell the metal clinging to her. Feel the smooth fabric of her windbreaker.
“You okay?” she asked, eyes still closed.
“Yeah,” her partner whispered back, “I just missed you.”
“Bad day?” her fingers ran through her partner’s soft, short hair.
The woman in her embrace didn’t answer.
“Do you want to talk about it?”
“Not really,” her partner adjusted to give herself more access to her body. She was taller. And spooning face to face was a skill they were still mastering. “I just want to hold you for a bit. You’re soft and warm.”
“Like a donut.”
Her partner scoffed somewhere near her face. In return, she spread her fingers to cup the base of her skull. Gently kneading the area. Almost immediately, the taller woman’s body relaxed. She made a small noise of satisfaction.
“I like it when you do that,” she said, her voice growing heavy.
“I know.”
“You are a wise donut.”
“Shush, go to sleep.”
Finding a picture to go with this piece was a struggle. Turns out there aren't too many pictures of couples cuddling out there that are not... erotic, shall we say?
So I decided to include an honest-to-goodness picture of the Original Cat and my teddy bear. The former cuddles me sometimes. The latter I've had since I was fifteen and any day now, it will turn in to a real, live partner for me just by the magic of my donut cuddles.
A few images did come close though...
Romantic Cuddling Couple, a drawing by Scott D Van Osdol, would have seriously used this one if I could afford it
Sappho and Erinna in a Garden at Mytilene, 1864 Watercolour on paper, by Simeon Solomon
Also, there is this super helpful article on WikiHow, which has lovely illustrations that I do not have permission to use and lots of useful information that I definitely will!
Also, if you are wondering, "Why donuts?"
Because
a. Donuts are soft, warm, sweet and they smell good
b. Imagine one of them surrounding you, curling around with you at the centre. Yes? That's what I thought.
